Kaspersky Lab Receives Three New Patents in Russia

Kaspersky Lab announces that it has been granted three new patents in Russia covering technologies aimed at checking web resources for malicious content, tracking the usage of multiple copies of software working under a single license and the efficient remote administration of computers in a network.
The first patent, № 2446459, covers a system and method of checking web resources for malicious content. The remote scanning of websites has become increasingly important, due to the growing number of incidents where a legitimate website becomes infected and spreads the malware to end users. Existing technologies for such scanning have their limitations, in particular, they are unable to find threats in certain website sections such as those where users enter a login and password. The patented system allows for the checking of websites using a list of URLs, and login credentials with a user-defined depth of analysis. This technology can also scan the content on FTP servers and track changes in the website’s content. When a threat is detected, the system alerts the administrator.
The second technology, covered by patent № 2446458, ensures proper usage of a software license when the license allows several copies of software to be run on different PCs. It defines a method for distributing information about the license keys being used between computers in the network. Based on this information exchange, a table containing data about licenses used in the network and the number of product copies for each license is created. If the number of product copies exceeds the license-defined limits, a notification is sent. Other possible actions include disabling unlicensed copies of the product, cancelling the license, or uninstalling the application.
The third and final technology is protected in Russia with patent № 2446457. It covers the system and method for effective remote administration of personal computers in a network. This technology allows the use of certain optimally chosen computers to serve as intermediaries between the administration server and targeted PCs. In order to define the best intermediary computer, the characteristics of all the PCs in a network are analyzed, particularly the performance of the processor, memory, etc. Computers with the best performance rating are assigned the role of intermediary PC for remote administration. This approach allows for a more efficient performance of the centralized remote administration of a company’s entire infrastructure.
With these new additions the total number of technologies protected by patents worldwide now exceeds 100. More than 140 patent applications are currently being examined by patent offices in the US, Russia, China and Europe.
