Crooks have taken a renewed shine to World of Warcraft, as we see with a scam offering free in-game pets. The scam part? You don\u2019t actually get the pet, and your account details are stolen.<\/p>\n<p>Most ardent fans of Warcraft know that the only place to get virtual pets is from the <a href=\"https:\/\/eu.battle.net\/shop\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">official store<\/a>, but a newly discovered <a href=\"https:\/\/www.grahamcluley.com\/phishers-target-world-warcraft-users-fake-game-pet-offer\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">phishing campaign<\/a> seeks to lure players into handing over their battle.net account info. The accounts are, presumably, then sold on in the black market for a tidy sum.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/media.kasperskydaily.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/103\/2017\/03\/06020732\/wow-pet-scam-screenshot.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-14451\" src=\"https:\/\/media.kasperskydaily.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/103\/2017\/03\/06020732\/wow-pet-scam-screenshot.png\" alt=\"World of Warcraft pet scam email screenshot\" width=\"908\" height=\"908\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Although the \u201cgift\u201d aspect gives this scam a slightly different twist, the results are the same: loss of personal info and account theft. As ever, the best thing to do with these sorts of emails is to delete and report them.<\/p>\n<p>You can also protect yourself from future scams by making sure you\u2019re especially vigilant with unsolicited e-mails:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Never click on links or downloads from unexpected e-mails or messages from unknown senders.<\/li>\n<li>Check the sender\u2019s address. Phishing messages often come from an address that looks somewhat similar to the company \u2014 like \u201cbattlenet@fakesite.com.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Read the text carefully: Spam and phishing e-mails often contain spelling or grammatical mistakes.<\/li>\n<li>Hover your mouse cursor over links and look at the tooltip that pops up either by the cursor or at the bottom of the window. For touch screens, you can do a \u201clong tap\u201d \u2014hold your finger on the link text until you see the <em>real<\/em> link. If the link says \u201cbattle.net\u201d but when you hover over, it says \u201cfakesite.com\u201d then it\u2019s probably best to avoid!<\/li>\n<li>Always (and we mean, always) run good <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kaspersky.com\/advert\/multi-device-security?redef=1&amp;THRU&amp;reseller=gl_socmed_pro_ona_smm__onl_b2c_kasperskydaily_lnk____kismd___\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">antivirus protection<\/a>.
